Bangkok Entertainment Guide

Thailand's bustling capital is a worthy rival to Asia's other major cities when it comes to evening entertainment. The city has long been known as a party hub and has a well-developed night scene, from the sophisticated to naughty adult-only nightlife. All types and budgets are catered for, including backpackers, business travellers and those looking to splurge.

Clubs and live music

Bangkok has a fantastic selection of nightclubs to keep hedonists happy. The clubs here are sleek and glitzy, especially those in the Ekamai district and along Royal College Avenue, where international DJs regularly take to the turntables. If you are looking for something more laid-back there are an equal number of lounge bars, with some of the most stylish housed in the city's top hotels.

The Thai focused bars tend to have live bands nightly that often play English language covers, and the atmosphere is usually lively and friendly at these places. Sukhumvit is one of the main entertainment centres and the bars here stay open late. If you're on a budget, try the bars along Khao San Road, a favourite with the backpacker fraternity. More upscale offerings are found on Silom Soi 4.

If you came to Bangkok to sample the naughty nightlife, Patpong offers dozens of go-go bars. Nana Entertainment Plaza and Soi Cowboy are other favourite districts with pretty Thai hostesses but expect these bars to close at 02:00. More on Bangkok.

Bars

Bangkok has some impressive bars that are worth splurging on for the views and experience but there are also many local, down-to-earth establishments where you can enjoy good music, people and pool at a snip. Favourite drinking zones among tourists and expats alike include Silom, Sukhumvit and Khao San Raod.

Budget drinking can be done in the bars along Khao San Road, where backpackers and a bohemian crowd congregate. Things are getting more upscale here these days so expect to see modern, club-like bars also. For a more sophisticated scene, Sukhumvit has the best offerings of bars for all types, from the naughty girlie bars along Soi Cowboy to British and Irish styled pubs suitable for all.

Silom is the other favourite bar haunt in the city and has numerous watering holes to complement its night market and Patpong district. The infamous go-go bars in this district are interspersed with regular bars where couples and friends can enjoy a relaxed drink with great music. Recommended bars in Bangkok.

Eating out

The dining scene in Bangkok has exploded in the past decade and alongside affordable, tasty Thai fare you will now find international cuisine served in stylish surrounds. The city's top hotels feature a selection of classy restaurants while some have roof top eateries with amazing views.

The riverfront area is bursting with dozens of eating choices but it can be inconvenient to get to if you are staying elsewhere in the city. A more centrally located dining area is Sukhumvit, which features both international and Thai restaurants. The city's major shopping areas also have a great selection of food and mainstream chain restaurants while cheap eats can be found at markets and along Khao San Road. Recommended Bangkok restaurants.
